Hi Everyone!

From the 16th of January, I will be hosting Project Educate on critique! As part of this I would like some opinions please and some thoughts about critique. You do not have to answer all these questions as a Q & A, but this is an open chance to share your thoughts and suggestions/advice on critique and critique on deviantART.

I will be using the comments here as references within the critique week as sources of opinion and advice, so please try not to restrict to one word answers. Thank you in advance, I really appreciate your contributions!

The Questions

1. Do you put your art work up in hope of obtaining critique?

2.  Do you actively seek critique on deviantART?

3.  How do you approach achieving critique on your work?

4. Can you share an experience when you’ve received critique and how you have reacted/taken action following the critique?

5. Have you ever received a critique you didn’t agree with- how did you respond?

6. What advice would you give to those seeking critique?

7. Have you given critique to others?

8. Do you critique exclusively to your watch list?

9. On average how many critiques to you give on dA in a week?

10. How long does it take you to write a critique?

11. What is your approach when writing a critique?

12. What advice would you give to someone who wants to give critique on dA?

13. What resources on dA have you found a useful guide for critique?

14. What groups do you recommend for critique

15. Have you used the 'critiquables' section or the critique system on dA?

Finally, if there is anything else you would like to say or share, please do :D

This is NOT exclusive to Literature, I’d like perspectives from all art forms please :D

Thank you!

Becca

1. Do you put your art work up in hope of obtaining critique?
No. Critique is a tool for improvement, not a goal.

2. Do you actively seek critique on deviantART?
No. I activate the critique option on some works, but nothing more.

3. How do you approach achieving critique on your work?
I am always glad someone took the take to make a critique on my work.

4. Can you share an experience when you’ve received critique and how you have reacted/taken action following the critique?
Twice I received a critique stating some anatomic issues in my work and both times I made corrections to those artworks. That's why I want critiques. I want to know what I do wrong to improve, and what people like about my art to fuel my will to progress. :D

5. Have you ever received a critique you didn’t agree with- how did you respond?
I've never encounter a critique I totally disagree with. Usually, it's just some parts. How I react will vary according to the subject. If it's an important aspect of the critique, I will explain why I wish to keep it the way it is done. Usually, it's just because I feel I might do worst trying to fix the problem or because it's not very important to me. Usually, you know what part of the critique is technical (anatomy, shading, proportions, compostion...) and what is emotional. I will change my artwork more based on the technical issues than on the emotional apects of the critique.

6. What advice would you give to those seeking critique?
Don't seek critique if your not ready to receive negative comments.

7. Have you given critique to others?
Yes. Several.

8. Do you critique exclusively to your watch list?
No.

9. On average how many critiques to you give on dA in a week?
Less than one. It's more like 1 every 2 months. English is not my main language, so it takes a lot of time to make a critique. I don't often have this time.

10. How long does it take you to write a critique?
Maybe one hour.

11. What is your approach when writing a critique?
I divide my critique into the subjects I want to talk about.
I usually start with my first (general) positive impression.
I usually ends with some positive wrap up.
I alternate between good and bad points.
I don't critique on stuff I don't know (for example, I'm not very good with composition, so I won't write about that).
I try to be cheerful, colorful. I'm not here to make people feel bad. It's already difficult since english is my second language and I might write something the wrong way.
I try to provide tips and solutions to fix what I think is wrong. Sometimes, I even link tutorials or examples from talented artists.

12. What advice would you give to someone who wants to give critique on dA?
If you don't have anything nice to say about the artwork, don't critique!
Don't just poinpoint the flaws, write how they can be fixed.

13. What resources on dA have you found a useful guide for critique?
I've never used a guideline from dA. It's my personal experience.

14. What groups do you recommend for critique
I don't know those groups.

15. Have you used the 'critiquables' section or the critique system on dA?
I use the critique option is some of my deviations.
