UK Devmeet and One Act updates

Thu Jul 24, 2008, 7:57 AM
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

One Act Play Contest

There is only 2 weeks left now until the deadline of ther 4th August. I am hoping that the entries will start rolling in and people have been working hard. The prize pool for this contest is so amazing, and I know if this wasn’t my contest I would have entered it by now!

If you have never written a script before, please check out the list of scriptwriting articles in my shout board and have a go. You never know what talent you may have hidden inside yourself and you won’t know unless you try!

:star: For information of prizes and other information, such as helpful hints, please check out The Contest Article and show it some love!

A UK meet!

:new: Wow look how long the list is so far- 23 people! Please if you are interested in coming let me know so I can add you to the list. Even if you’re not 100%, I will be noting people on this list nearer the time for confirmation anyway.

Thank you to those who voted in my poll regarding this meet. The idea of meeting people on the internet is always a nervy one, but I think if it is kept well-organised and we are careful, it could actually be a rather exciting and new experience.

As the poll has spoken, it looks like we’ll be having a meet in London. I am quite happy with this, as most places can get a direct route into London after all. For those slightly disappointed it isn’t further north, maybe depending on the success of the London meet, we could arrange another one in the future for that.

I have decided to take control and set a date already. This will be Saturday 6th September. I thought it would be a good time before school/college/uni gets into swing and also a Saturday means those who work during the week will be able to come too. If there is too much objection to this date, I will reconsider, but for now I think it is a fairly good one.

There have been discussions of what to do, and I thought well since we’re deviantArt, it could be fun to visit Tate Modern. It is free to get in, and I will try and make the day cost as little as possible, as I know train prices are not great. We could meet at Waterloo Station, as it is probably safer to meet in a larger, busy location than a quieter one. The actual time and place for meeting would be noted privately to those confirming to come.

If you would like to come along to this meet, please let me know and I will add you to this list below.

Haikuwrimo

Those involved in haikuwrimo may have noticed I have not submitted since the 10th July. I apologise that I am dreadfully behind, but am hoping to still have 31 by the end of the month. Things have been a bit busy with guests visiting and spending time on other projects and writings. However I will make sure I comment on everyone else’s and have a proper catch up!

Personal

Slimming world total loss is 11.5lbs in 5 weeks. I am hoping to hit the stone on Monday so fingers crossed. This means I have been exercising like crazy recently, relying on the Wii fit for most of it.

I'll continue this journal when I get home from work- just realised it is 5pm!

For 1 and 2, I don't read enough on DA right now to really answer. I watch some lit folks and add to that list each month, but I don't really have a favorite at the moment and I haven't done any non fiction reading here.

Ancient-Egyptian to English Dictionary? That sounds so cool! Do you use it often, or was it just a spur-of-the-moment buy because it seemed interesting?

1. extraction. by ~wander-lust was the last piece of non-fiction I've read that I really loved, mainly because it really made me think about my own life and of the nature of people in general. I don't know if you could consider him "competent" because that is a very subjective term. I guess if you could call something free-form prose, that would be his style. He writes in a stream-of-consciousness kind of way, but not like how we think; more like how life is itself: constant flowing from one moment into the next.

2. ~wander-lust, of course, as well as my good friend *raspil.

3. A...um...fall?

4. Coffee!

5. Sweet Onion Teriyaki Chicken!

6. Most of the time.

7. Already am! :#1:

8. London, actually! It seems like such a beautiful place to visit. I watched a documentary once about all of the many different art galleries that are there, and it looked like such a nice place.

9. I have the perks of being a wallflower! :p

10. Haha, this is a very interesting question... I would have to say, all of the notes written on tiny slips of paper of quotes and reminders, my stacks of CDs, a small collection of shot glasses from places I've been, a dictionary... Oh, and "The Office" mousepad I'm using! :giggle:

3. Don't know.
4. I'm not a big fan of ice cream, but when I crave ice cream, it's usually very specific: chocolate or vanilla with chocolate sauce or rum and raisin. Sometimes mango.
5. Don't care for subway much.
6. Depends on who does the featuring.
7. Sure, if I figure out how it works.
8. Paris, NYC, London, Athens, Lahore, in roughly that order. I like cities.
9. Nothing?
10. My diary, my fountain pen, the book I'm currently reading, the tattered computer printout of Picasso's L'enfant au pigeon (my avatar) and my folder of poetry

Harmless

Harmless is a user-led UK-based organisation that is working towards providing support, information, training and awareness to those affected by self harm. These include not only people who are self harming, but friends, families, teachers and professionals who may seek support and information. I have been working with them this year to raise their profile, not only in the UK, but on an international front also. They are very close to my heart and so far deviantArt have taken a huge stride in awareness, by helping Harmless with creative people submitting positive writing, and in the future we may come back here for artwork and further awareness updates.

On a personal note, I want to sincerely thank everyone who has participated in the support of this organisation. Everyone who has responded, even by faving a news article, spreading the word or even just opening yourself up to a little more understanding, I am truly grateful.
