Remember in April when cruelty came in the form of NaPoWriMo and Script Frenzy? Those poor prose writers may have felt lost what to do, and twiddled their thumbs impatiently? Well the wait is over as July brings a writing challenge for the fiction writers in the form of Flash Fiction Month!

Flash Fiction Month (FMM)

What is FFM?

Flash Fiction Month (or FFM) is a month long challenge throughout the month of July. The objective is to write a different piece of flash fiction every single day of the month so by the end of the month you could have 31 pieces of new writing!

A “Flash Fiction” is a piece of prose which has a wordcount between 6 and 1000 words. The piece must be a complete story from start to finish and a standalone piece of work.

This is a great opportunity for those who have perhaps wanted to try a new form of writing, or enhance current skills. It is also worthwhile for anyone who just wants to build up their writing portfolio or try out ideas they have had brewing for a while.

How do I participate in FFM?

You can sign up officially through Flash-Fic-Month, which is the group where this challenge was born. This is the 4th year that the challenge has been run and the group contains everything from prompt banks, folders to share work and even a chat room so you can get and give support to other participants.

July is Flash Fiction Month.
Every day, from July 1st through July 31st, participants are asked to submit an original piece of flash fiction between 55 and 1000 words. There are thirty-one days in July, and that means thirty-one short stories. Any topic. Any genre.
Don't be intimidated by the thought of having to write exactly thirty-one stories in thirty-one days. Flash Fiction Month isn't about deadlines, it's about having a go.
So sign up here to register yourself for a month of fiction, friendship and fun.
Every week prizes will be on offer for the best submissions. To be eligible for prizes, you'll not only need to complete all seven stories for that week and upload them before each day is through, you'll also need to complete our challenges.

:work: Tips For Writing Flash Fiction
by Stephen R. Smith with excerpts by Kathy Kachelries
In order to improve as a writer, you need feedback. It's difficult to write something the size of a novel, and equally difficult to carve out the time required to read one and provide any sort of meaningful critique on it. This severely handicaps the feedback loop so important for the aspiring writer.

Key Tips!

:star: You do not necessarily have to write 31 pieces. Don’t think because you miss a few days or more that you have failed. The purpose of these writing months are to encourage you to produce something you wouldn’t have had before, so even if you only create 4 pieces, it has still been a worthwhile adventure!

:star:  I don’t want to pick on an individual deviant, but if you want to read some good flash fiction, just browse the gallery of SRSmith!

:star:  Remember that the purpose of this month is quantity. Quality comes afterwards so don’t worry if the piece you write that day isn’t its best. Make use of good critique sources and get feedback on those pieces ready to polish and rewrite from August onwards! This is exactly what your scrapbook on dA is for!

:star: Make the most of the  FFM chat room for prompts, feedback and general support.

:star:  Make the most of the rest of June to build up a list of prompts and ideas! Take a notebook around with you and note down anything from snippets of conversation to odd buildings or people that could inspire you for a flash fiction! Try to build up an extensive list; don’t stop at 31 prompts because you may find coming back to them they’re not as appealing!

I managed to be away for a week right at the start of this, and come back to find my name in your post.

Thanks for the mention!

I guess I'd better get fully engaged and quick!
