(Updated)DD suggestion guidelines!

Wed Jun 6, 2012, 1:29 AM

Hello all

Firstly, I would like to say I am truly grateful for every DD suggestion I receive. It makes me feel reassured that the pieces featured are community decisions, not just my own subjective thoughts and findings. There are millions of writings out there and I can’t see every single one. I rely on good spots of others in hope of continuing to share a variety of good quality and unique literature. Thank you to those who suggest and those who continue to make the time to share their findings.

Please note

:bulletblack: I prefer 1 DD suggestion per note.

:bulletblack: Please always try to tell me why you are suggesting this piece. A bit of enthusiasm from the suggester can help make me feel enthused about the piece too. Plus it helps add a description to the DD :)

What I look for in Daily Deviations

:bulletblue: For those who know me as a writer, you will know I write scripts. However I like to review all forms of literature, prose, poetry and even nonfiction.

:bulletblue:  I am someone who appreciates writing with personality over generic works that could be written by anyone.  Show me originality- no bird poems or broken angel wings please. I don’t want poems about being a poet (unless written in a unique way).

:bulletblue: I want pieces that show character. What is this piece doing that makes it different? What does the writer add of themselves into the piece?

:bulletblue: Good quality and technicality. People often ignore the importance to good solid grammar and the technical side of writing.

:bulletblue: Something that excites. It’s great to have a well written piece, but it needs to feel exciting and fresh.

:bulletblue: Be realistic about the quality, don't just submit it on a whim or because it’s your best friend and they’ve not receive a DD in the X years they’ve been on dA.

What I reject in DD Suggestions

:bulletred: Don't send in something riddled with spelling mistakes and poor grammar.  This shows a writer is lazy, everyone knows what spell check is; there’s no excuse.

:bulletred: On an aside note, make sure ellipses are used correctly. It is one of my pet hates when a piece is overdosed with the bloody dots of doom.

:bulletred:  Remember to look at the substance, not just the style or idea!

:bulletred: Often, I get submissions for pieces of “poetry” that are not really what I define as poetry- usually prose with line breaks instead of what a poem should be. I created a poll on this in hope others could help me define what poetry is a guideline for those who are unsure.

:bulletred: Presentation should not be ignored. Unless the piece is unbelievably amazing, I will not feature pieces written in subscript or overdosed by fancy CSS. Most publishers ask for pieces to be in a clean format- usually size 12 Arial etc so it doesn’t detract from the words. I agree with this. (Plus I need my glasses on for subscript!)

:bulletred: If the piece has a preview image, please ensure this is credited fully.

:bulletred: Don't just suggest a DD because it is popular. Just because a piece has over 100 favourites doesn't necessarily mean it is DD Worthy.

:bulletred: Please note literature CVs do not feature Journals, news or fanfiction (There is a fanfic CV!).

Other rules about DDs

:bulletgreen: We cannot feature more than one DD a day per Community Volunteer.

:bulletgreen: DDs can only be awarded to members once every 6 month period, not 3 months. (This is hard coded, you cannot physically bypass this!)

:bulletgreen: Self suggestions are welcome, but please keep in mind all of the above and show what is your very best.

:bulletgreen: Pieces that are for contests that have not yet finalised cannot be DD’d. This includes member contests, not just official deviantART ones. Therefore if you want to suggest something which is a contest entry, please ensure that contest has finished.

If you have any questions please ask on this journal.

If you don't want to suggest to me, you can also suggest your literature DDs to the delightful `thorns
(who may occasionally throw her coconuts out of the pram if there are no DDs!), ^neurotype (Who throws cake at the coconut) or ^NicSwaner (who then eats the newly merged coconut cake).

FAQ #61: What is a Daily Deviation?

FAQ #18: Who selects Daily Deviations and how are they chosen?

FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

I need your help to continue this though! I would like you to start sending me DD suggestions. In fact today I want all of you to note me at least one suggestion.  Don't forget to tell me why you believe it deserves a DD too!

I look forward to your suggestions! :)

I presume its obvious we shouldn't suggest our own works for DDs. Or is that where I have been going wrong? ;)

I put it in there in my last update. I don't want to make a big deal about it, but it bugs me! I need glasses for reading as it is, subscript does not help!

It's not like I won't feature it, but it needs to be exceptional and have some justification as to why subscript has been used.

Oh word.

Because it doesn't display for me anyway I don't mind - I think everything I've featured that was in subscript was good - but I have this news article on explaining why it's a bad idea sitting in my Stash. I'll try to post it this week :P I have a mod on my big monitor; it doesn't look very small on my phone or my netbook. So I think that's part of the issue.

I can't think of a single good reason to use it, TBH :stare:

 I'm happy about adding the preview image credits. :) I think I'm going to install that as a new rule at DLD as well.

Technically it should happen anyway, the images are usually not theirs to use in the first place :D

I'm really happy you mentioned the preview pictures in this, it's one of my pet peeves when people don't credit them. (Or don't ask to use them because it's "Just a preview image".)
